Incontinence

What Is It?

Loss of bladder control or incontinence is a sensitive topic to discuss or seek help to overcome. Often, this change in body function is not reported to healthcare professionals since it is thought to be a natural part of aging. This is far from the truth. In fact, the bladder is actually made up of muscle and is supported by other muscles commonly called the pelvic floor. These muscles can become weakened from illness or medical conditions; however, they can be retrained and strengthened with rehabilitation techniques.

How We Treat It

By partnering with Aegis Therapies, we provide rehabilitation interventions to address pelvic muscle weakness as well as assessment of other potential causes for your incontinence. This may include:

  • Joint pain or stiffness which delays your ability to get to the bathroom timely or delays your ability to safely undress to use the facilities
  • Impaired balance or leg strength which slows your mobility and safe use of restroom facilities
  • Assessment of sensation and cognition, which if delayed or decreased, can cause your inability to know your bladder needs to be emptied
  • Review and consideration of medication impact on the muscles that support good bladder health

What You Can Expect

As a leader in rehabilitation treatment innovation, we also assess the benefits adjunct modalities may provide to you, such as electrical stimulation through Aegis Therapies' Geriatric Enhanced Modalities (GEM) program. This approach, supported by evidence, assists in strengthening the muscles of the pelvic floor.
